In today's Australia, the digital world is more complex than ever. For families, understanding this landscape is the first step toward building healthy tech habits. It's not about rejecting technology, but about fostering a balanced relationship with it.

A Shifting Media Landscape

Recent data highlights a significant shift in how we consume information.

  • Social media has now overtaken traditional online news sites as the primary news source for many Australians.

  • One in four Australians now name social media as their main source of news.

  • This trend is especially strong among young people, with Instagram (40%) and TikTok (36%) being the top news platforms for those aged 18-24.

The Rise of Misinformation

Alongside these new consumption habits, there is a growing national concern about the quality of information.

  • A staggering 74% of Australians are worried about misinformation, the highest level of concern among all 48 countries surveyed in a recent report.

  • There are specific fears about certain platforms and figures, with 57% of Australians viewing TikTok as a major misinformation threat.

  • The same percentage (57%) are also concerned about influencers spreading misinformation.

This environment, where entertainment and information are blended, requires families to develop new levels of digital literacy and critical thinking. The practical challenge of balancing screen time—where children spend an average of 7.5 hours per day—with offline life remains a key concern for parents.

In our next post, we will explore the foundational building blocks every family can use to create a healthier relationship with technology.
